One of the most common questions we see in local Facebook groups is, "Is this a termite?" More often than not, the insect in the photo is actually a flying ant. While these insects may appear similar at first glance, they have important differences, and misidentification can lead to unnecessary worry or costly mistakes.
Why the Confusion?
Both termites and ants produce winged swarmers. These swarmers leave established colonies to start new ones, usually during warm, humid weather. Homeowners often discover them near windows, doors, light fixtures, or spider webs and immediately fear the worst.

What Most Homeowners Don't Know About Termite Swarmers
A termite swarmer is not the termite causing damage to your home. In fact, swarmers do not feed on wood at all.
Their sole purpose is reproduction.
After leaving the colony, swarmers pair off, shed their wings, and search for a protected location where they create a small reproductive chamber known as a royal chamber. Inside this chamber, the future king and queen begin producing the first generation of workers that will eventually establish a new colony.
Thousands of swarmers may emerge during a single event, but most die within hours due to dehydration, predators, or failure to find suitable conditions.
The real concern is what produced them.
Swarmers are typically generated by mature colonies. By the time homeowners notice swarmers indoors, the colony responsible may have already been feeding on the structure for years. In many cases, swarmers are the first visible sign of a hidden infestation.

Unlike termites, flying ants generally indicate an ant colony is reproducing rather than causing structural damage. While some species, such as carpenter ants, can damage wood, most flying ants are simply a seasonal nuisance.
Why Location Matters More Than the Insect
One of the first things a professional inspector considers is where the insect was found.
Swarmers emerging from a mulch bed, tree stump, landscape timber, or wooded area may indicate an exterior colony.
Swarmers emerging from a wall, crawlspace, flooring, window frame, ceiling, or living area are often far more concerning because they may indicate activity beneath or within the structure.
The location of the insect frequently tells a bigger story than the insect itself.
Conducive Conditions That Increase Termite Risk
During inspections, we look for conditions that make a property more attractive to termites.
Common examples include:
Wood-to-soil contact
Firewood stacked against the home
Tree stumps and buried roots near the structure
Excessive mulch against the foundation
Leaking exterior faucets
Clogged gutters and downspouts
Poor drainage around the home
Crawlspace moisture issues
Untreated wood debris in crawlspaces
Dense vegetation touching the structure
Expansion joints and foundation cracks that provide concealed entry points
Many termite infestations begin because these conditions allow termites to remain hidden while maintaining the moisture they need to survive.

Mud tubes on foundation walls or piers
Discarded wings near windows and doors
Soft, damaged, or hollow sounding wood
Bubbling paint that resembles water damage
Sagging floors or damaged trim
Swarmers appearing inside the structure

Visible ant trails
Outdoor nests in mulch, soil, or landscaping
Swarmers concentrated around windows during spring and summer
Activity near food or moisture sources
No evidence of mud tubes or wood damage
